What to look for when buying a used car
Buying a used car is one of the biggest purchases you’ll make. Here’s a checklist to help you avoid the pitfalls.
- Run a vehicle history check — before viewing the car, check for hidden finance, write-offs, stolen markers, and mileage discrepancies.
- Inspect the bodywork — look for mismatched paint, uneven panel gaps, or filler — signs of previous accident damage.
- Check under the bonnet — look for oil leaks, corrosion, and mismatched parts. Check coolant and oil levels.
- Review the service history — a full service history shows the car has been maintained. Missing stamps are a red flag.
- Test drive thoroughly — listen for unusual noises, test all electrics, and make sure it drives straight without pulling.
- Verify the paperwork — check the V5C logbook matches the vehicle. Ensure the seller is the registered keeper.
