Car clocking is the illegal practice of winding back a vehicle’s odometer to make it appear to have lower mileage than it actually does.
How common is it?
It’s estimated that around 1 in 16 used cars in the UK has had its mileage tampered with. A higher mileage vehicle is worth considerably less, making clocking a lucrative fraud for unscrupulous sellers.
How can I protect myself?
A vehicle history check cross-references the mileage recorded at each MOT test. If the figures don’t add up, you’ll see a mileage discrepancy flag on the report.
